GERASHCHENKO ON YUKOS ENTERING WORLD FINANCIAL MARKETS

MOSCOW, July 22 (RIA Novosti) - The achievement of an agreement with the government would make it possible for Yukos to enter the world financial markets. Viktor Gerashchenko, Chairman of the Yukos Board, expressed this opinion at a news conference on Thursday.

According to him, the company management has drawn such conclusions "from the consultations with our financial analysts."

"We know that the Yukos leading shareholders are conducting secret negotiations with regard to the company management. We understand the position of Khodorkovsky. We know it. He repeatedly made his statements through the lawyers. However, we believe that it is the Yukos previous management that is in the first place responsible for the situation in which the company has found itself and for the tax lawsuits," Gerashchenko said.

No contradictions exist between the Yukos management and the Board, said the Chairman of the Yukos Board.

"It will be recalled that in one of its letters to the government Yukos proposed paying 8 billion dollars to clear off its tax debt; this is a coordinated position of the management and of the Board," remarked Gerashchenko.

"As to the statements which were allegedly made by Khodorkovsky, we know about them only from the media. I do not know how much they correspond to reality," he said.

Gerashchenko does not exclude that the shareholders of the oil company are conducting negotiations about the appointment of Sibneft head Yevgeny Shvidler to the post of the chairman of the Yukos Board.

"Yukos does not know about any negotiations with Mr. Shvidler, but we cannot exclude this," Gerashchenko told reporters. He added that quite possible that these negotiations are being conducted by the company's shareholders.

"I believe that the Board and the management of the company are doing everything possible for settling the situation around the company," Gerashchenko said.

At the same time Chief Executive Officer Steven Theede said that this information (about possible appointment of Shvidler to the post of the chairman of the company's Board) was mere rumors.

"These rumors are constantly going on, and I do not know whether they are serious or not," he said.
