RUSSIAN SPACE PARACHUTE TESTS PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER

MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - The Lavochkin Scientific-Industrial Association plans to test the space parachute Demonstrator-2 in September.

It is designed for the return from orbit of large loads, weighting up to dozens of tons. Such a return costs less that other versions.

The folded space parachute is brought to the orbital station by a ballistic missile, launched from a submerged submarine.

In the International Space Station, the cargo is fixed to the parachute and will return to Earth along a set trajectory. Before getting into the atmosphere, the parachute is inflated with liquid nitrogen to resemble an inverted two-level cone. Although the temperature inside of it reaches 6,000 degrees Centigrade, special thermal protection will preserve the load intact.

Later, this technical device can be used not only for the return of cargoes but also the evacuation of the crew and landing on other planets.
