MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - There will be no more than 19 candidates for the presidency in Chechnya, Abdul-Kerim Arsakhanov, chief of the Chechen election commission, suggested in an interview with RIA Novosti on the telephone.

"As of today, 19 individuals have announced the intention to stand for the presidency, 17 of whom have already opened election accounts in the Savings Bank," said Mr. Arsakhanov.

Mr. Arsakhanov recalled that 6 p.m. Moscow time on July 14 was the deadline for filing documents for registration for presidential candidates.

"New candidates can appear on the list in theory. However, this is unlikely to happen," said the election commission chief.

Mr. Arsakhanov said the election commission had received relevant documents from 6 candidates. "Two of them, Sultan Aiskhanov and Abdula Bugayev, provided voters' signatures in support of their candidacies, while the other four, Alu Alkhanov, Malik Saidullayev, Vakha Visayev, and Mukhumd-Khasan Asakov, provided caution money," said Mr. Arsakhanov.

The election committee is expected to check the documents provided by the candidates within 10 days. "All claimants to the post of Chechen president will be finally announced on July 24," said the election commission chief.

Presidential elections in Chechnya were scheduled for August 29 after the tragic death of President Akhmad Kadyrov on May 9 in Grozny.
