CIS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN COMPLETES VISIT TO UZBEKISTAN

TASHKENT, July 6 (RIA Novosti) - At a Tuesday meeting with Vladimir Rushailo, the CIS executive committee chairman, Uzbek President Islam Karimov again confirmed the republic's interest in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

"The meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov lasted for over two hours. Uzbekistan again confirmed its interest in the Commonwealth of Independent States," Rushailo told journalists in the reception house of the Uzbek foreign ministry after the talk with the Uzbek leader.

"We were of the same opinion with the Uzbek president that there is no alternative to the CIS," said the chairman.

In his words, he arrived in Uzbekistan "with ideas and proposals on CIS improvement, enhancing the CIS role." "On most issues, our positions with President Karimov coincide," Rushailo said.

"The issue of deepening economic integration was a priority. We also discussed issues connected with new threats and challenges: terrorism, extremism and drug aggression. The conversation touched upon issues connected with the activity of regional organizations," said the chairman.

On Tuesday, the official part of the CIS executive committee chairman's visit to Uzbekistan finished. On Wednesday, Rushailo leaves for Dushanbe. He is also expected to visit Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
