MOSCOW BELIEVES RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER'S VISIT TO SEOUL IS GREAT PROGRESS IN BILATERAL RELATIONS

MOSCOW, July 4 - RIA Novosti. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to the Republic of Korea that has ended on Sunday will help promote bilateral relations to a new level, the Press and Information Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"During their negotiations Sergei Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea Pan Ki-mun exchanged views on a broad range of bilateral issues and international [political] environment with account for the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The parties have emphasized that their positions over the North Korean nuclear problem were very similar," the Russian Foreign Ministry wrote in the statement.

An emphasis at the talks was made at a need to find a solution to the North Korean nuclear problem and on the role of the six-nation talks in solving the problem. Both Russia and South Korea came to a conclusion that six-nation talks should be continued.

"[South] Korea has emphasized Russia's important and constructive role in the Korean settlement and in providing security and stability in Northeast Asia," reads the official statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

At the meeting the sides also underlined certain progress in political, economic, and cultural cooperation between Russia and the Republic of Korea.

"The sides praised the growth of bilateral trade and said there was a need to expand and intensify it, including investment and military-technical cooperation," the Foreign Ministry wrote in the statement.

The ministers talked a lot about cooperation in peaceful space research, energy, and transportation. Sergei Lavrov and Pan Ki-mun also endorsed further cooperation between Russian and South Korean research centers and businessmen.

"Sergei Lavrov and Pan Ki-mun have also discussed lifting some visa restrictions between the two countries and agreed to prepare relevant documents soon," according to the Press and Information Department of theRussian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov invited his South Korean counterpart to visit Russia. The invitation was accepted with gratitude.

According to the Foreign Ministry, a visit of the Russian Foreign Minister to South Korea will step up the development of bilateral relations and render them a new quality.

The Russian Foreign Minister went to the Republic of Korea on July 3 to 4 on an invitation from his South Korean counterpart - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea Pan Ki-mun. During the visit Lavrov met with South Korean President No Mu-hyon to hand in an address from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
