VIEWPOINT: RUSSIAN-GEORGIAN SUMMIT OUGHT TO HELP FIND SOLUTION FOR GEORGIAN-OSSETIAN CONFLICT

MOSCOW, June 1 (RIA Novosti) - The Georgian minister of state for conflict settlement, Georgy Khaindrava, hopes that a Russian-Georgian summit scheduled for July 2 will help find a way out of the Georgian-Ossetian impasse (South Ossetia is a self-proclaimed republic on the territory of Georgia). "I hope the Russian and Georgian presidents will find solutions for all the questions tomorrow," Khaindrava said in a RIA interview.

The level of Russian-Georgian relations is such that the conflicting situation in the region can be settled, Khaindrava said at a Moscow press conference Thursday.

In his opinion, the conflict should by no means be frozen.

"Russia and Georgia can join efforts to resolve the frozen conflicts which if protracted are fraught with most unfavorable consequences for both countries," he added.

He believes Russia and Georgia are approaching a frame treaty which is not to be affected either by the situation in South Ossetia or negotiations on Russian military bases on the territory of Georgia.
