ADVERTISERS STAND UP FOR PROFITS AS DUMA CUTS TV BEER ADS

MOSCOW, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - The State Duma, parliament's lower house, is launching a big attack on television commercials. It started with beer ads to drastically amend the acting Advertisement Law.

"Incompetent," advertisers unanimously describe the amendments.

The SAMI-Media Industrial Associations Council, the advertising committee of the federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Russian Consumers' Union convened a news conference on the occasion today.

"What parliament has in mind is a prompt pinpoint adjustment of the advertising pendulum. What it will actually achieve is downright absurdity. Advertising is a capital investment resource," snapped Boris Yeremin, president of the International Advertising Association Russian branch.

Advertising mammoths are wary for profits that will certainly dwindle as the tentative clip ban strikes the burgeoning Russian beer market.

The amendment that started the storm taboos people and pets appearing in clips, and limits beer commercial casts to the small strip of time between 5 and 10 p.m.

"Legislators are launching an offensive on advertising self-regulation," said Vadim Kulikov, head of the SAMI public commission for advertising ethics.

The Duma has appointed a third-reading vote on the controversial amendments for July 7. However high and mighty the brewer lobby may be, many experts think the house will approve the bill.
