ST.PETERSBURG, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - The Mariinsky Theater (formerly, the Kirov Theater), the Chatley Theater and the Credit Agricole Group are to sign a sponsorship agreement in St.Petersburg on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the Mariinsky Theater of Opera and Ballet said that the agreement envisages a joint production by the Russian and French stage performers of the great Italian composer Gioachino Rossini's opera "A Journey to Rheims". The production is to be sponsored by the Credit Agricole Group.

The new production of "The Journey to Rheims" is scheduled to premiere in the next 2004-2005 season at the Mariinsky. Then, the production will be performed in Chatley during the Mariinsky's tour of France.

Rossini wrote `The Journey to Rheims` in 1825 to mark the French king Charles X Bourbon's coronation (Charles X was King of France until 1830 when he was dethroned as a result of the 1830 bourgeois revolution. For many centuries through 1825 French kings used to be crowned in the 13-century Rheims Cathedral). Until now the Mariinsky stage has seen only a concert version of this opera.

The Mariinsky spokesperson pointed out that the Chatley Theater has long-standing cultural ties with Russia: Pyotr Tchaikovsky conducted an orchestra performing his symphonies on the Theater's stage at the end of the XIX century. 1906 marked the beginning of the famous `Russian Seasons` staged in Chatley by theatrical producer and sponsor Sergei Dyagilev.

Mariinsky's singers have been annually performing in Chatley since 2000 when they debuted on the Theater's stage with the concert version of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's (1844-1908) `The Snowmaid`. In the following years the Mariinsky brought to Chatley a number of ballets originally staged by choreographer Mikhail Fokin (1880-1908; Fokin led the ballet troupe at the Russian Seasons festival in Paris in 1909-1912 and 1914), `The Nutcracker` ballet, and operas `Yevgeny Onegin`, `The Queen of Spades` and`Demon`.
