MOSCOW, June 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Vice-Premier Alexander Zhukov said at a meeting with Patricia Hewitt, British Secretary of State for Industry and Trade, that the United Kingdom was a major investor in the Russian economy in terms of turnover and dynamics.

British companies' projects, including those of BP and Royal Dutch Shell, promise billions in investments in Russia's oil sector and have stirred up a keen interest of the Russian government. "If these projects are implemented in full they will come as a breakthrough in the sphere of direct investments in the Russian economy," said Mr Zhukov.

Mr Zhukov added that Russia was also seeking investment in other economic sectors like hi tech and machine building. "We are open to and prepared for cooperation in all spheres," said the vice-premier.

Ms Hewitt touched on a possibility of ratifying the Kyoto Protocol by Russia. Mr Zhukov replied that the issue was yet to be discussed as Russia did not want to be subject to considerable restrictions under the protocol. However, Russia believes the Kyoto Protocol is essential for environment protection, according to Mr Zhukov.
