MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russian customs officials have destroyed 29,000 counterfeit compact discs and audio cassettes recording well-known Russian performers intended for export to Germany, RIA Novosti learnt from the press service of the Russian State Customs Committee.

"In early June, officers of the Central Operative Customs Office of the Central Customs Board seized over 21,000 compact discs and 7,000 audio cassettes", the press service said.

The range of pirate products was broad, from pop stars to already popular Star Factory figures, he said. The total cost of the batch was 819,000 roubles (1 dollar approximately equals 29 roubles).

As decided by the court of the town of Serpukhov (Moscow region), the firm owing the pirate discs is found guilty and its products have been seized and destroyed.

According to the report of the International Intellectual Property Committee, the production of counterfeit discs in Russia may reach 340 million annually, at only 30 million genuine, the State Customs Committee said.

"The quality of Russian forgeries is higher than Chinese, and abroad, Germany for instance, they are very much in demand", the SCC press service said.

According to the SCC Main Anticontraband Department, 61 cases of administrative offences concerning the illegal movement of intellectual-property goods across Russia's customs border have been initiated since the start of 2004.
