ARGENTINA UNLIKELY TO BACK RUSSIA'S ACCESSION TO WTO

MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russian negotiators are skeptical about the results of the Russian-Argentine talks on the WTO entry, a source in the Russian delegation told RIA Novosti commenting on this week's talks with Argentine counterparts in Geneva.

According to the source, the main problems are beef and vegetable oils import quotas. Argentina traditionally supplies these goods to Russia.

In the near future Russia plans to preserve protective measures to back national producers.

"This is a very sensitive position. The Argentine delegation demands inadmissible concessions from us," RIA Novosti's interlocutor said.

Other partners, including the European Union and US, agreed with Russia's position, he added.

"Argentina expects us to do impossibilities. In this connection its official statements on support for Russia's accession to the WTO are merely words," the Russian negotiator stressed.

On Wednesday Argentine Minister of Foreign Relations, Trade and Worship Rafael Antonio Bielsa arrived in Moscow. The 2nd Russian-Argentine business forum is timed to coincide with his visit.

Before his departure to Moscow, Mr. Bielsa told RIA Novosti he would support Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization.

"We are convinced that it is necessary to promote multilateral trade and, undoubtedly, we shall be able to solve this problem. Russia with its possibilities and potential is sure to join the WTO," the minister said.

The open negotiations between Russia and Argentina aimed at our consent to Russia's WTO entry are underway, he added.
