INTERNATIONAL RUSSIAN LANGUAGE HIGH SCHOOL OLYMPIC CONTEST BEGINS IN MOSCOW

MOSCOW, June 20 - RIA Novosti. The 11th International Russian Language High School Olympic Contest will be held at Moscow-based Pushkin State Research Institute of the Russian Language from Sunday till June 27.

The organizing committee told RIA Novosti that foreign high-school students - winners of such national competitions - were also admitted for the final round; all in all 250 participants from 33 countries are expected.

According to the organizing committee, the participants will be classified into two age groups - under 14 and over 14. As always, there will be three tests: Oral Speech, The Country and Culture, and a composition.

The competitors' performance is evaluated at each test to make a total grade - either a gold, silver, or bronze medal, or a certificate of merits.

Five absolute champions will get a scholarship and examination-free admission to any Russian Language and Literature Department of any national university, supported by the Russian Education and Science Ministry.

The previous 10th International Russian Language High School Olympic Contest was held in June 2001 and involved 258 high-schoolers from 32 countries, 114 of whom got gold, 53 silver, and 91 bronze medals.
