RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY CONGRATULATES PEACEKEEPERS IN GEORGIAN-ABKHAZ CONFLICT AREA

MOSCOW, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - June 21, 2004 marks the 10th anniversary of the formation of the collective peacekeeping forces in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict area.

The collective forces consisting of Russian servicemen are carrying out one of the most successful peacekeeping operations under the mandate of the CIS Presidents' Council, said the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The situation in the conflict area could have developed into uncontrolled tensions without the selfless peacekeeping actions, the Foreign Ministry noted. Peacekeepers provide real security of the Georgian and Abkhaz population and stability in this region and are ready to sacrifice their lives for this purpose. World community and the UN Security Council highly value the peacekeepers' role.

The CIS peacekeepers successfully cooperate with the UN mission of observers in Georgia. They are responsible for safe return of the people leaving the conflict area for the places of their permanent residence.

Highly assessing the responsible and professional execution of their duty, the Russian Foreign Ministry congratulated the collective peacekeeping forces on the 10th anniversary of their formation. Their activities is a key aspect of the Georgian-Abkhaz settlement for the sake of peace and stability in the Caucasus and prosperity of its nations, said the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
