TBILISI, June 10, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - A number of non-governmental organizations from Kabardino-Balkaria, Adygeya and the Karachai-Circassian Republic (Russia's North Caucasian republics) called upon Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili "not to commit the mistakes of the past once again" and to settle Georgai-Abkhazia problems by force (Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic in Georgia), ApsnyPress news agency reports (Abkhazians call their country in this way).

"The Georgian leadership is specially responsible for peaceful settlement of the Abkhazian issue," the statement says.

"North Caucasian non-governmental organizations remind Mr. Saakashvili that hundred of volunteers from the North Caucasian republics as well as from Russia's South fought for the invaded republic and for its interests from the first days of the war," the statement says.

In case Abkhazains are attacked again we are ready to join hands and fight for Abkhazia's sovereignty," the authors of the statement underline.

According to them, it was political mistakes by the Georgian and Azerbaijani leadership, which resulted in dramatic hostilities in Abkhazia, South Ossetia (another self-proclaimed republic in Georgia) and Nagorny Karabakh (an area in Azerbaijan inhabited by Armenians).

Novosti-Georgia news agency says, representatives of a number of North Caucasian non-governmental organizations signed the statement.

The Abkhazian authorities believe their strategic goal is to gain international recognition, ApsnyPress reports.

"To gain international recognition is our strategic goal," Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba said at a scientific conference in the Abkhazian State University discussing the platform of the United Abkhazia Socio-Political Movement.

The Minister stressed that Georgia is the only country out of all CIS member-states, which stands for extension of economic sanctions against Abkhazia.

"Life has proven that it is not possible to settle Georgia-Abkhazia issue by force," he said.

Sergei Shamba believes it is necessary to improve economic ties with North Caucasian republics in the way it is done with the Krasnodar Territory.
