MOSCOW, June 7. (RIA Novosti) Moscow approves the common goal of the US plan Greater Middle East on upgrading the region politically, socially and economically, Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told the press on the eve of a G-8 summit.

At the same time, Russia proceeds from the fact that whether to run reforms is the private affair of the very countries of the region, first of all, the diplomat added.

When speaking on the Middle East topic, Yakovenko said it might be the cornerstone of the coming discussions on establishing partners' relations with the Middle Eastern countries.

"The task the G-8 is facing is to provide these countries with possible assistance that would meet their demand," he stressed.

Moscow expects the results of the coming summit to become a major contribution to the settling of key global tasks facing mankind on a collective basis and as part of multilateral cooperation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman is sure the G-8 summit will strengthen Russia's positions in the club.

"The process is based on some positive trends in the economy, the political stability and the broad support of the foreign policy course the Russian leadership is taking on the part of the public ," the diplomat believes.

Russia is strictly fulfilling its commitments, including financial and economic ones, to Western partners in the G-8 and international financial organizations.

Mr. Yakovenko recalled that Moscow was making active arrangements for becoming a rotating chairman of the G-8 in 2006.
