SOUTH OSSETIA: GEORGIA DEPLOYS U.S.-TRAINED TROOPS IN REBEL REPUBLIC

MOSCOW, June 1 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia has ostentatiously deployed special force troops in the area of its conflict with South Ossetia. The soldiers had been trained on US-Georgian military partnership programmes to enhance Georgia's anti-terror efforts and help to oust terrorists from its land. Their involvement in interethnic clashes is alarming and makes dispute settlement prospects doubtful, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs press and information department warns in a statement circulated today.

South Ossetia is Georgia's former autonomy, and now unrecognised republic. Georgia introduced commandos and Interior troops there yesterday, May 31-allegedly to put an end to rampant smuggling.
