TEHERAN, May 30 - (RIA Novosti). Iran backs the Russian suggestion to hold an international conference on Iraq with participation of UN Security Council member states and countries adjacent to Iraq, official spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Reza Assefi told RIA Novosti.

"We back the initiative to hold this forum because adjacent states must be involved in solving the Iraqi problem," he said.

"At the same time, the activities and presence of such important and significant countries as Russia and France, UN Security Council member states, are very important for the settlement and resolution of the Iraqi crisis," he added.

Assefi confirmed Teheran's position that the occupation of Iraq should end as soon as possible, and power should be transferred to the Iraqi people.

Russia has suggested that an international conference on the Iraqi problem should involve UN Security Council member states, countries adjacent to Iraq, and all parties concerned.

On Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin again aired this suggestion during negotiations with President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak. Mr. Mubarak also backed the move.
