MOSCOW, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry views the decision of the United Nations Security Council on Russia's chairmanship in the Counterterrorist Committee as a recognition of its constructive and consistent policy towards all-round strengthening of international antiterrorist cooperation.

This is said in the communique of the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"Russia as the chairman of the Counterterrorist Committee will promote the efficiency of this organ of the UN Security Council, strengthen and broaden its contacts with regional organisations, contribute to the success of the Committee's fulfilling of entrusted functions as the key coordinator in the sphere of antiterrorism", the communique reads.

On May 27 the United Nations Security Council decided to confirm the appointment of the Russian Federation as the chair of the Counterterrorist Committee. Russia will lead its work until January 1, 2005.

Established in line with resolution 1373 of the UN Security Council, the Committee is the central tool for monitoring the states' fulfilment of their obligations to fight terrorism.

The first sitting of the Committee under Russia's chairmanship was held at the United Nations on May 27. Boris Mylnikov, head of the CIS Antiterrorist Centre, informed those present of the main areas of work of his centre and many-sided interaction of the antiterrorist law-enforcement agencies.

"Members of the Committee spoke up for the expansion of its contacts with the CIS Antiterrorist Centre and more active information exchange, including in the provision of technical assistance in its antiterrorist activities", the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
