MOSCOW, May 26 (RIA Novosti) - Alexander Rumyantsev, head of the Federal Nuclear Energy Agency, and the United States Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham will ink an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of wasted nuclear fuel from research reactors, RIA Novosti learnt from the Agency on Wednesday.

"It will be a cooperation agreement as regards the taking fuel from Russian-made research reactors into Russia. It targets prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons and cutting the threat of international terrorism by reducing the number of zones of keeping nuclear materials fit for the production of nuclear weapons", said the FNEA representative.

He added that the agreement will be singed at the Rumyantsev-Abraham meeting on May 27. American ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow will also be present.

The sides will discuss bilateral cooperation in nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear energy research.

Rumyantsev and Abraham signed the memorandum on cooperation in the withdrawal to Russia of fuel from Russian-made research reactors in Washington on November 7, 2003. It was announced then that the sides had began preparations for a corresponding agreement. -0 -(nov/sm)
