MOSCOW, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - The international group of companies Itera has bought the controlling interest of the American oil and gas company Dune Energy, says its press release circulated on Wednesday.

The deal, made through Itera's subsidiary Itera Holdings BV, is estimated at 12 million dollars.

Itera is one of the largest independent producers and sellers of natural gas operating in countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic region.

The company works on industrial projects in the field of energy, gas chemistry, metallurgy and construction in countries of Europe, Asia and America.

Since 1998 Itera has been developing own production of gas in Russia's Yamal-Nenets autonomous region in West Siberia.

The company has invested over 1.5 billion dollars in the development of the Russian gas sector.

Itera is the first private company to have put to use gas fields in the Extreme North of Russia.

Overall, Itera's fields in the Yamal-Nenets region have produced about 80 billion cubic metres of natural gas. In 2003 more than 30 billion cubic metres of gas was put out with Itera's participation.

Together with its partners Itera partakes in the realisation of gas projects in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Over 200 kilometres is the length of the gas pipelines built with Itera's participation in Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Belarus, Lithuania and the Sverdlovsk region. Another 100 kilometers was put into service in 2003.

Dune Energy is engaged in the development of gas and oil fields in Texas, and possesses 14.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas and vast reserves of oil.
