MOSCOW, May 14 (RIA Novosti) - Authorities in the breakaway Georgian republic of Abkhazia have asked the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Georgian-Abkhaz settlement for help in preventing an anticipated provocation on the part of the central government in the Gali District and in the Kodor Gorge.

Defense Minister Vyacheslav Eshba has forwarded a letter to General Kazi Ashfaq, Chief Military Observer of the UN Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), in which he warns of the provocation allegedly in the making. According to him, Georgia's plans to send units of the Defense and National Security Ministries into the Kodor Gorge, presenting the move as an anti-terrorist operation, Tatyana Gulia, press secretary of Abkhazia's diplomatic mission to Russia, told RIA Novosti Friday.

Given the above, the Abkhaz Defense Ministry is asking Gen. Ashfaq to inform the UN Secretary General's Special Representative about developments in the region and to assist in restoring stability there.

Ms. Gulia quoted Abkhaz law-enforcement agencies as reporting that rallies in support of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili were being staged in the Gali District and that Georgian flags and portraits of Saakashvili had already been brought in for the purpose.

Abkhaz Vice President Valery Arshba met Friday with senior law-enforcement officials of the Gali District to discuss the latest developments and decide how to react.
