BISHKEK, May 11 (RIA Novosti's Julia Orlova) - On Tuesday the parliament of Kirghizia has ratified the interstate agreement on the status and terms of stay of Russian servicemen stationed at the Russian air base in the city of Kant.

RIA Novosti learnt from the press service of the Kirghiz parliament that under this document servicemen of the Russian air base functioning in Kirghizia within the framework of the joint rapid-deployment forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (made up of Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Armenia) get the status of technical staffers of the diplomatic mission. They get diplomatic immunity from criminal persecution by the local authorities.

Ratification of this agreement settles all the interstate legal questions regarding the status of the Russian military in Kirghizia.

A similar status in Kirghizia is also enjoyed by the American military stationed at the base of the antiterrorist coalition in the international airport Manas in the Kirghiz capital.
