SENIOR RUSSIAN OFFICER IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING GROZNY BOMB ATTACK

GROZNY, May 9 (RIA Novosti) - Colonel General Valery Baranov, commander of the joint group of forces in the North Caucasus, remains in a critical condition following today's bomb explosion in the Chechen capital of Grozny, presidential envoy Vladimir Yakovlev told reporters.

Baranov has undergone a complicated surgical operation and had one of his legs amputated, Yakovlev told the media. The doctors are doing all they can to save the wounded general's life, he assured.

According to the latest counts, the terror act committed this morning at Grozny's Dynamo stadium, the venue of an official ceremony to mark Victory Day, left four people dead and another 53 wounded, Yakovlev said. He confirmed reports that Military Commandant Grigory Fomenko was among those injured.
