SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE CONDEMNS TERRORIST ACT IN GROZNY

BRUSSELS/PARIS, May 9 (RIA Novosti) - Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer has condemned a terrorist act in Grozny.

"This terrorist act must be condemned by the world community: death and violence are never to become a means of solving problems, instead they will give rise to new problems", says Schwimmer's statement received by RIA Novosti.

He stressed the fact that such cruel terrorist act was committed during the festivities on the occasion of the [59th] anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

On behalf of the Council of Europe Schwimmer expressed condolences to the families and close relations of those who were killed in the blast.

An explosion went off at 10.35 a.m. at the Grozny Dynamo stadium. According to preliminary data an unidentified explosive device was placed at the central grandstand of the stadium where a concert on the occasion of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 which is marked in Russia on May 9 was under way. The blast left 42 people wounded, and four killed, in particular president of Chechnya Ahmad Kadyrov.
