TEHERAN, May 9 (RIA Novosti's Nikolai Terekhov) - Members of Russia's diplomatic corps in Iran, including the Embassy, the Military Attache's Office, and the Trade Delegation, held Victory Day ceremonies to commemorate compatriots who perished during the Great Patriotic War against German Nazism (1941-1945). They laid flowers and wreaths at an obelisk to Soviet soldiers outside Teheran, and at tombs in a Russian cemetery in the city's southeastern part.

No combat operations took place in Iran during WWII, but the Soviet military contingent was deployed here to control the transportation of materiel from Gulf ports to the USSR. Many of its officers and men lost their lives to disease and accidents.
