PREMIER PROMISES TO PUNISH THOSE GUILTY OF FIRE AT MILITARY DEPOTS

KIEV, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich promised that all those guilty of the fire at military depots near Melitopol (Zaporozhye region - south of Ukraine) will be punished.

He said this in the area of the disaster at a meeting with evacuated citizens of Melitopol region villages.

All those injured in explosions will get monetary compensation from the state, he said.

By the end of the day, Melitopol is to host a session of a special governmental commission to look into the circumstances of the emergency situation at artillery depots. By experts' estimates, the human factor became the reason for the disaster. At least five people died in the explosions.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevgeny Marchuk, the head of the National Security and Defense Council, Vladimir Radchenko, Interior Minister Nikolai Bilokon, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on defense, Georgy Kryuchkov and other officials accompany Prime Minister Yanukovich in his trip to the Zaporozhye region.

In his turn, the commander of Ukraine's Armed Forces' engineer troops, Vadim Kovalsky, said at a Kiev briefing that the clearing of the burning army depots of unexploded shells will start after the fire is put out and explosions stop.

In his words, the area of the base (300 hectares) is covered with a large number of unexploded ammunition.

On the whole, in Kovalsky's words, the situation has been taken under control and is stabilized.

11 fireworking groups are working at the site. Tomorrow another seven will join them.

"First of all, populated localities in the area of debris dispersion, mainlines, railways and highways will be cleared," the commander of the engineer troops said.

In Kovalsky's words, windows were broken and roofs blown off in the settlements' buildings. That's why, he added, it's necessary to replace some 3,000 square meters of glass and up to 800 square meters of slate.

The officer assured that the defense ministry is taking all necessary measures to compensate people for the damage inflicted.

"Working teams have been established, which have started work. The situation in the settlements will be stabilized within a few days and the residents will gradually return to their homes," Kovalsky said.

To buy glass and slate, the Ukrainian defense ministry allocated 200,000 hryvnias ($37,700). The government allocated some 6.7 million hryvnias ($1.26 million) to eliminate the consequences of the disaster. 4 million hryvnias out of the sum, or $754,700, will go to compensate the population for the damage.
