KIEV, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Fireworkers continue to clear of ammunition the territory around military depots in the Melitopol district of Ukraine's Zaporozhye region (south of the country).

RIA Novosti was told Saturday in the Ukrainian MChS (Emergencies Ministry) press service that yesterday fireworking groups discovered and took away thirty 125-mm artillery shells and ten 122-mm missiles.

The fireworkers are to clear of ammunition and its debris an area of 314 square km.

Territories near power transmission lines, part of the railway track, a 4-km section of the gas pipeline were examined. After that, it became possible for maintenance crews of electricians and gas experts to start work. On Friday they restored power and gas supply to some villages and the town of Melitopol.

For two days, due to damage of the gas pipeline in Melitopol, state bakeries did not work, which led to a lack of bread. Mini electric bakeries equipped with diesel power generators provided the city with bread.

Evacuated people are provided with medical aid and hot food.

As of Saturday, fires with further detonation of ammunition continue at military depots. Explosions occur more seldom.

A fire with subsequent explosions at the 275th armaments base near the Novobogdanovsk military unit No. A2985 occurred on Thursday about midday local time and has been on for over 40 hours.

90,000 metric tons of ammunition for all kinds of artillery weapons adopted by the Ukrainian Army were stored at the base.

According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevgeny Marchuk, the human factor probably became the reason for the incident.

The Ukrainian prosecutor general's office launched criminal proceedings against the country's defense ministry officials in regard to negligence.
