GEORGIAN PARLIAMENT READY TO SANCTION EARLY ELECTIONS IN ADZHARIA

TBILISI, May 4 (RIA Novosti) - The Georgian parliament is ready to support President Saakashvili's proposal to hold early elections in the autonomous republic of Adzharia, reads a statement adopted by the legislature on Tuesday.

"The Georgian state will not tolerate the anti-constitutional activities of the Adzharian authorities. If within ten days the autonomy's leader will not fulfill the demands set, the parliament will be ready to support the Georgian President's initiative to suspend the powers of local bodies of power and hold early elections," the document reads.

If it is impossible to hold democratic elections on the territory of Adzharia, the parliament urges the president "to use all measures envisaged by the constitution to restore constitutional order in the autonomy," the statement emphasizes.

The deputies view the dispersal of a peaceful rally in Batumi as Adzharian leader Aslan Abashidze's refusal to settle the crisis by political methods.

When commenting on the latest developments in the autonomy, the parliament's speaker Nino Burdzhanadze pointed out that "either Abashidze's team cannot adequately assess the situation or Adzharia's incumbent leadership consciously avoids solving the problem and tries to bring it to a deadlock, provoking the use of force by the center".

"Otherwise there is no explaining the recent action of Adzharian leadership that has further escalated the situation during the 10-day ultimatum," she said.
