84 RUSSIAN SPORTESMEN TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHENS PARALYMPICS

MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - Eighty four sportsmen from Russia will participate in the Athens Paralympic Games, due in the Greek capital on September 17 through 28, 2004, RIA Novosti learnt on Thursday at the headquarters for the preparation and participation of Russian sportsmen in the 12th summer Paralymlpics in 2004.

A regular sitting of the headquarters was held the night before under the chairmanship of Vladimir Lukin, president of the Russian Paralympic Committee.

The Russians will vie for medals in the judo, equestrian sport, track-and-field, table tennis, powerlifting, swimming, rifle firing, wheelchair tennis, football for palsy sportsmen competitions.

The number of participants in a national team depends on the quota fixed by the sports committees of the International Paralymic Committee on results of their performance in 2001-2003.

Preparation is held at centralised training sessions.

In May swimmers will participate in the international competitions in Britain and track-and-field sportsmen in Germany in July.

Last week the footballers completed their regular training session in Moscow. In May the first tour of the Russian championship will be held in Tikhvin and in June the team will fly to Turkey to continue Paralympic preparations.

In May equestrian sport competitors will go to Austria to participate in the international competitions; marksmen will have competitions in Germany.

Judoists reached success in the international tournament in Germany last week.

Sportsmen of the Russian team show good results in the preparations, which lets us hope for a good performance in Athens.

The Russian delegation of 139 members will arrive to the Paralymic Village on September 10. The 2004 summer Paralympics are expected to gather about 6,000 guests from 134 countries.
