TORTURES ABOLISHED IN IRAN

TEHRAN, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - A law on the abolition of tortures has been put into practice by a decree of the head of the Iranian judicial authority, Hashemi Shakhrudi, Iran's justice ministry information department said Thursday.

In line with the document which was sent to all law enforcement bodies of the Islamic Republic, "all tortures of the accused and people on trial with the aim of receiving their confession are prohibited in Iran." Iran's investigation bodies are ordered to put purposeful, specific, and clear questions relating to the essence of the matter, to use scientific-technical methods of investigation and seek material evidence.

It is prohibited to show ungrounded interest in the private life of the people on trial, insult them, use force against them, to blindfold them, use psychological methods of influence, said the Iranian justice ministry.

As follows from the document, solitary confinement is not regarded as a torture.

The law on abolition of tortures underwent long coordination in the Iranian parliament and the Islamic Republic's Supervisory Council. After the text was brought in line with the Iranian legislation and the country's Constitution, the law came into force.
