60TH ESCAP SESSION CLOSES IN SHANGHAI

MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - The 60th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) has closed in Shanghai, the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The session focused on the consolidation of regional cooperation and fight against new threats and challenges.

The Shanghai declaration confirming ESCAP's role as the UN main center in the Asia-Pacific region was adopted at the session. The document also calls to consolidation of the commission's role as an effective instrument against new threats and challenges.

In addition, the declaration points out the necessity of further work on the formation of an integrated transport system in the region and the development of Asian-European transport corridors.

During the session 26 countries including Russia also signed an inter-governmental agreement on the network of Asian highways.

The participants discussed a number of international social-economic problems in the spheres of transport, energy, environment, the fight against poverty, the development of information, communications and space technologies, etc.

"The decisions taken at the 60th ESCAP session will boost further development of comprehensive regional cooperation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
