GAZPROM SET TO DEVELOP INVESTMENT PROJECTS IN CENTRAL ASIA

MOSCOW, April 27 (RIA Novosti) - At a sitting on Tuesday, the OAO Gazprom board of directors found it expedient to go on ensuring long-term supplies of natural gas from Central Asia to Russia and third countries, says the Gazprom press release.

Agreements with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan have been signed and are under way. They intend the purchase and transportation of gas, rehabilitation and development of gas transport capacities, joint projects in the production of gas, development of new fields.

In 2004 through 2006, the transportation volume of Turkmen and Uzbek gas will increase from 42 to 56 billion cubic meters, and by 2010 to the amount of 80 to 90 billion cubic meters.

Gazprom's fulfillment of contractual obligations in the purchase and transit of gas is necessitated by the rehabilitation of old and commissioning of new gas transport capacities in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia.

At the first stage in 2004-2006, it is planned to increase the productivity of the gas transport system Central Asia-Centre (GTS SAC) and lay the ground for building new gas pipelines.

At the second stage in 2006-2008, new gas pipelines will be built, making it possible to increase the GTS SAC throughput capacity to 90 billion cubic meters annually.

Gazprom has got down implementing a number of joint investment projects in republics of Central Asia, intending the rehabilitation and development of their gas complexes. For instance, the agreement has been signed to further develop the Shakhpakhty field, an agreement for geological survey and development of fields in Uzbekistan's Ustyurt region is in preparation for signing.
