RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, KAZAN MAYOR DISCUSS CELEBRATIONS OF CITY'S 1000TH ANNIVERSARY

MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - On Saturday Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Mayor of Kazan (the capital of Tatarstan) Kamil Iskhakov discussed preparation for and international events timed to the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of Kazan's foundation.

The anniversary will be marked in August 2005.

All in all, about 53 billion rubles ($1 is equal to 29 rubles) will be allocated for the celebrations.

The project is financed by federal, regional and local budgets and investors.

The first five-station line of the Kazan subway will be commissioned by the anniversary.

In addition, the project "Enhancing Kazan's Investment Attraction" should be implemented by August 2005. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development is to grant a credit worth $125 million under the guarantees of the Russian government to realize this project.
