RAO UES' POWER GENERATION GREW 3% IN 2003

ST. PETERSBURG, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - RAO UES (Unified Energy Systems) power generation output grew 3 percent in 2003, Russian national electricity grid operator's CEO Anatoly Chubais told the National Conference of Power Engineers currently held in St.Petersburg.

"In terms of production, last year saw the company steadily increasing power generation. In total, RAO UES generated 635 billion kwh of electricity in 2003. It is 3 percent more than the company generated in the previous year," Chubais said.

In the fall-winter of 2003-2004 RAO UES generated about 368 billion kwh, a rise of 17.88 billion kwh in year-on-year terms. Anatoly Chubais pointed out that in December 2003 the company's power plants registered the highest work load in the past nine years.

The company's CEO said that the country's energy system had been operating without major failures throughout last winter. In the critical fall-winter period, RAO UES experienced no fuel shortages. He noted that prior to the 2003-2004 fall-winter period all units of the national power grid operator had successfully performed the required maintenance service of every piece of equipment on their inventory.

On the whole, with due account of repaid accumulated debts, the company's sales of energy resources in 2003 amounted to 101 percent as compared to 2002. RAO UES units' debts fell by 15.2 percent to 67.73 billion rubles as of January 1, 2004.
