BRUSSELS, April 21 (RIA Novosti's Alexander Shishlo) - The EC Chairman Romano Prodi has spoken up for reinvigorating cooperation between Russia and the EU specialised institutions against terrorism.

The strengthening of relations between Russia, on one hand, and the Europol and the Eurojust (European Judicial Cooperation Unit), on the other hand, as well as progress made by Russia in the fight against money laundering, protection of documents from forgery, against drug traffic and human trade, as well as border protection give as an opportunity for further operative cooperation in the struggle against terrorism, Prodi said in the RIA Novosti interview before his Moscow visit due on April 22-23.

Asked how the Russian Federation and the European Union can jointly oppose the 21st-century threats, Prodi spoke up for the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the struggle against the financing of terrorism, including the use of such instruments as the freezing of funds etc.

We should step up cooperation within the framework of the relative international and regional forums, strengthen the present non-proliferation regimes so as to ensure control over material resources and technologies which can be sued to implement programmes of creation of weapons of mass destruction, Prodi said.

He believes that the international community is still vulnerable before terrorism.

The recent terrorist acts in Moscow and Madrid show that, despite our efforts against terrorism, we are still vulnerable before it, said the EC chairman.

He called one of the key goals of the European Commission the build-up of international consensus in the struggle against terrorism.
