MOSCOW, April 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has to work out mechanisms of interaction with the United States.

This viewpoint was voiced in a RIA Novosti interview by Vasili Mikheev, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and director of the Asian Security programme of the Moscow Carnegie Centre, in a comment on the foreign ministerial sitting of the SCO member countries in Moscow on April 23.

He said that the members of the SCO (made up of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan) will soon have to adapt its policy to the new conditions obtaining in the world and Central Asia.

A unique situation has taken shape in Central Asia today, he said. On one hand, Russia's military presence is increasing through the mechanisms of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (made up of Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Armenia) and, on the other hand, American and NATO military presence targeting Afghanistan has appeared in Central Asia.

Mikheev said that in this situation "the logical idea of trilateral cooperation Russia-China-the United States emerges, for example, in the dialogue format SCO-the United States".

"It is very important to develop such mechanisms that Russia, China and the United States be, instead of competitors or acting against each other in Central Asia, the three countries cooperating against the new threats in the interest of creating here a market and democratic environment", the expert said.
