ISLAMABAD, April 17 (RIA Novosti's Vladimir Shreter) -At their meeting held on April 15-16, Russian and Pakistani political scientists discussed the current status and prospects for expanding bilateral political, trade and economic ties.

The two-day meeting "Pakistani-Russian Relations and their Significance in the Regional and Global Context" was organized by Peshavar University's Asia Research Center. This unique organization studies processes taking place in Russia, China, Afghanistan and Central Asia and works out recommendations for Pakistan's Government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The participants noted that the former irritants hindering expansion of Russian-Pakistani relations in the past have ceased to exist. It was also pointed out that the two counties do not use in full the benefits of the current situation.

Politically, the sides emphasized, Russia and Pakistan have the same or close positions on the need to establish a multipolar global system. They also stand for enhancing the UN role in the world. Both Moscow and Islamabad reject unilateral actions taken by the USA to change the existing world order through use of military force.

Participants in the roundtable discussion believe that Pakistan and Russia should step up their efforts to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation in heavy industry, engineering, oil & gas sector and space research. Pakistan hopes to substantially increase its export of agricultural products as well as textiles and clothes to Russia.

Both sides stand for expansion of bilateral scientific and cultural relations and intergovernmental contacts and emphasize the importance of information exchange.

The recommendations worked out at the meeting will be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and leadership of Pakistan.
