MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - A new international terminal of Vnukovo airport will contribute to competition development, the Russian minister of transportation and communications, Igor Levitin said Saturday at an unveiling ceremony.

"The unveiling of the terminal in Vnukovo is only the beginning, such modern airports will compete in Moscow," Levitin said.

The new terminal occupies an area of 25,000 square meters, its design throughput capacity is 1,200 passengers an hour. The project is the first stage of reconstruction of international airport Vnukovo. The overall volume of investments will total over $1,300 million, out of which $500 million will be invested before 2007.

Andrei Kazmin, the head of Russia's Sberbank (Savings Bank), said at the ceremony that Sberbank took the decision to participate in the financing of this project four years ago. The volume of financing rendered by Sberbank was 24 million euros. The credit, in his words, was granted for seven years "on a rather competitive interest." "We are sure this project will pay," Mr. Kazmin said.

He said Sberbank already started talks on continuation of financing the reconstruction of the airport's complex. "Sberbank is ready for the most ambitious projects in this direction," Mr. Kazmin said.

"It will take no more than two years to say: Moscow has a modern, convenient, good airport, which will in fair competition show that it is better than all other airports of the city and the country on the whole," Moscow Mayor Luzhkov said.

The mayor said the terminal is one of the most well equipped airports.

Another terminal will be built soon, which will become international, while this one will then deal with domestic flights, Mr. Luzhkov said.

He said passengers will be brought to the airport in "comfortable mode." The improved infrastructure of the terminal will make it possible to service about 4,000,000 people a year. The terminal has a multistorey parking lot for 400 places.

The old building of the airport will be fully reconstructed, a new freight terminal, hotels, and service centers will be built. New transportation interchanges and light metro lines, to connect the airport with downtown Moscow, will be built. This will reduce the time needed to get to the airport to 20-30 minutes.
