SHEVARDNADZE OFFERED POST OF UN SECRETARY GENERAL

TBILISI, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - Georgian ex-president Eduard Shevardnadze was offered to take the post of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Georgian TV company Imedi said Saturday.

By its information, the proposal was voiced yesterday evening at a meeting in Tbilisi of Eduard Shevardnadze with Kul Gautam, aide to the UN secretary general, deputy executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

"Different committees of the UN need advice of such an influential and experienced person very much. The UN will be glad if you agree to this proposal," Kul C. Gautam said.

Eduard Shevardnadze gave an oral consent to the proposal to take the post of the UN secretary general and said he would be able to perform his duties while staying in Georgia.
