MOSCOW, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow regrets that the USA and the European Union countries voted against the UN resolution condemning contemporary forms of racism, says a statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Department received by RIA Novosti on Saturday.

"It is regrettable that the EU countries and the USA voted against this document supported by the overwhelming majority of the member-states on the Commission," the statement says.

On Friday, April 16, the 60th session of the UN Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution moved by Russia "On Inadmissibility of Actions Fomenting Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance".

The Resolution, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement, "refers to the verdict of the Nuremberg Tribunal and the final documents of the World Conference Against Racism (South Africa, 2001) and expresses serious concern about the ongoing build-up of extremist movements and political parties advocating racism, ethnocentrism and xenophobia and propagating the ideology of fascism and racial supremacy".

The Resolution denounces the current phenomenon of glorifying former members of the criminal "Waffen SS" organization.

The document adopted by the Commission emphasizes that erection of monuments glorifying former members of SS units, organization of their marches and other similar actions (attempted, for example, in the Baltic countries) desecrate the memory of innumerable victims of fascism, make an adverse impact on the growing generation, and is absolutely incompatible with the commitments undertaken by UN member-states.

"Such actions fuel contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia and encourage proliferation and expansion of various extremist parties, movements and groups, including fascists and skinheads," the statement says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry points out that "in conformity with the Resolution, the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Commission on contemporary forms of racism was instructed to study the issue and submit appropriate recommendations at the next session of the Commission."
