ST PETERSBURG, April 17 (RIA Novosti - Northeast) - The Inter-parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will send observers to Kosovo to look into the situation there, Sergei Mironov, Speaker of the Russian Federation Council and Chairman of the CIS Inter-parliamentary Assembly Council, told a news briefing in St Petersburg on Saturday.

"The group of observers will, apparently, involve members of parliament from some of the CIS nations. The group is expected to stay in Kosovo from April 21 to April 24," said Mr. Mironov.

The group's findings will be discussed at a regular session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in May, according to Mr. Mironov.

"What happened in Kosovo a month ago is outrageous. We must not be indifferent to ethnic cleansing, human deaths and the destruction of unique monuments. All these are happening in the 21st century in the very heart of Europe. Representatives of the parliaments of Kyrghyzstan, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus will look into the situation in Kosovo," said Mr. Mironov.

The initiative to send observers to Kosovo was advanced by the Assembly's permanent committee on defence and security issues. The CIS Inter-parliamentary Assembly Council approved the initiative at a meeting on Friday.
