NEW YORK, April 17 (RIA Novosti's Andrei Loshchinin) - Russia is interested in maintaining cooperation in the high technology sphere with the United States, Mikhail Margelov, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council (parliament's upper house), said as he spoke at Harvard University (Massachusetts) on Friday.

"Russia has inherited, from the former Soviet Union, dozens of hi tech novelties, which can make a solid basis for mutually beneficial cooperation with the United States. Maintaining cooperation in this sphere would mean that the two countries have resolved, probably, the most complex problem of bilateral relations," said Mr. Margelov.

Within the next 4 years of Vladimir Putin's presidency, Russia will remain the USA's partner in such crucial aspects of global politics as the fight against terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction, settlement efforts in the Middle East and Iraq, according to the MP.

Mr. Margelov said the United States should also make more energetic moves in this direction.

While pursuing its foreign policy, Russia will heed the globalisation processes and will seek to have a place in Greater Europe's affairs and economic zone. The country also intends to take advantage of its geopolitical location, i.e. that of a transport bridge between the East and the West, according to Mr. Margelov.

"All the former Soviet republics will remain within the scope of Russia's foreign political priorities," said Mr. Margelov.
