AMERICAN ECONOMIST HIGHLIGHTS RUSSIA'S IMPORTANCE FOR GLOBAL ECONOMY

MOSCOW, April 15 (RIA Novosti's Vasily Zubkov) - An international conference entitled "Science and Our Future: Ideas to Change the World" is currently underway in the Russian capital. It has brought together scholars from 155 countries, including the U.S. economists Jonathan Tennenbaum and Lyndon LaRouche Jr. The latter is also a challenger to John Kerry as a Democratic candidate for the presidency.

While in Moscow, LaRouche met with students and academics of the Lomonosov University, Russia's most prestigious institution of higher learning whose graduates form the elite of national science and business.

Speaking to them about the present situation in the world economy, he pointed out that the economic and financial crisis facing the United States and other major developed countries had not yet grown into a global disaster, but, as he put it, is emitting a rotten odor already.

The curtailing of health and other social programs in the States has affected large groups of the population. The ever-rising cost of living (according to LaRouche, food prices alone have risen 50 percent in recent years) create an environment in which even those who have permanent employment feel insecure and uncertain about their future. The crisis is the hardest on the younger generation of Americans, the economist said.

The human race must acknowledge that the world economy is in danger and begin to do something about it, LaRouche said. He warned that inaction would only make matters worse.

Russia has a key role to play in pulling the world economy out of the crisis, he believes. With its territory spanning both Europe and Asia, it serves as a bridge between European and Asian civilizations, LaRouche said. In his opinion, this country and also the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan could play a great role in establishing transport, information and technological links between the two continents.

Russia's importance for the world economy also arises from the abundance of fossil fuels, minerals and other vitally important resources in its Asian part, LaRouche remarked. He proposed developing resources of Siberia with the help of what he identified as "development corridors," to run north of the Trans-Siberian Railway all across the vast Asian continent.

LaRouche makes no secret of his dream to become a U.S. President and to meet in this capacity with Russia's Vladimir Putin.
