RUSSIANS APPROVE SPACE EFFORT: PUTIN

MOSCOW, April 12 (RIA Novosti) - Space effort progress is a must, says Russia's public majority. President Vladimir Putin is happy about it.

It is no longer necessary to convince anyone that space endeavours are essentially important, he said at a Federal Space Agency gala on Space Pilot's Day.

To prove his point, the President highlighted recent opinion probes, in which more than 80% of respondents spoke of the national importance of space breakthroughs-an opinion that was not so widespread by far a mere several years ago, as probes and sociological research were showing.

Russia celebrates Space Pilot's Day on a grand scale every April 12, anniversary of the world's first manned space flight, made by Soviet pilot Yuri Gagarin.
