MINE ACCIDENT IN SIBERIA CLAIMS NINE LIVES

NOVOSIBIRSK, April 10 (RIA Novosti- Siberia's Maksim Koshmarchuk) - Up to 37 miners might be blocked underground in the Taizhina mine (Siberia) where an accident occurred this morning.

"In all, this shift received 54 warrants for underground mine works," the press service of the Kemerovo region administration told RIA Novosti.

"After the accident, six miners got out themselves. Three injured miners were rescued. Eight bodies have been found in the mine. According to the number of issued warrants, 37 miners are still underground," said the press service.

According to the Kemerovo civil defense and emergencies department, 13 people have been saved, two of them are in hospital. "However, rescuers have no information about the accurate number of miners underground," spokesman for the department has told RIA Novosti. "Over 30 people are being looked for," he specified.

Mr. Korchagin confirmed that nine bodies had been discovered.

Rescue reinforcements are being summoned to the site of the accident, he added.

"The reinforcements are coming to continue the non-stop rescue efforts and to clear the rubble in the mine, that has cut off the way to the epicenter of the accident, where miners might be staying," said the spokesman for the department.

Twenty militarized rescue units numbering over 100 people from Osinniki, Novokuznetsk, Prokopyevsk, Mezhdurechensk and Kemerovo are now working at the scene.

The rescue operation has been continuing for about 12 hours.
