RUSSIAN CONSUMERS TO GET TRUSTWORTHY INFORMATION ON GM FOOD

MOSCOW, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia sets new requirements for marking Genetically modified (GM) food as well as makes up a list of such food.

In accordance with sanitary regulations adopted by Chief Sanitary Physician of the Russian Federation, the threshold for GM sources in the food subject to marking is 0.9 percent. Food made of GM sources containing no protein and DNA is subject to marking.

Earlier, all food containing more than 5 percent of GM components had to be marked in Russia.

The regulations have been adopted for the citizens to be able to use the right to get the trustworthy information on compliance with the requirements established by the European Union, which sets the same GM threshold of 0.9 percent.

The Russian market has 14.8 percent of meat products and 20.4 percent of bakery, milling and barley products containing GM sources. Meanwhile, 80 percent food contains more than 1 percent of GM sources.

In Russia it is allowed to use thirteen types of food of vegetable origin got by means of GM technologies in the food industry. According to the federal service for protection of consumers' rights, all these types of food have been thoroughly analyzed and studied.

Moreover, there are certain food products in the world, which have GM analogues. It is allowed to sell them in the food market. They are tomatoes, vegetable marrows, papaya, melon, which have not yet undergone registration in Russia but they may get to the Russian market, the service reports.

The check results show that 36.4 percent of Russian products and 47.8 percent of foreign ones in the Russian market studied in 2003 had no GM certificates.
