MOSCOW, APRIL 7, 2004, RIA NOVOSTI - Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a letter to the President of Chile, Ricardo Lagos Escobar, to share his views on the prospects of economic cooperation between the two nations, the Kremlin press service reports.

Russia and Chile have enough potential to boost bilateral trade as well as high-tech cooperation in the aviation, space, and nuclear power industries, President Putin believes. "We see the guarantee for successful advancement along this path in the progress being made by the economies of Russia and Chile and also in their political stability," he points out in the message.

Mr. Putin goes on to say that "our interaction within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum looks very promising indeed. No doubt this is a significant area [of cooperation], one that is opening up additional opportunities for partnership, including in trade." The Russian leader's letter has been handed to Mr. Lagos by Parliament Speaker Sergei Mironov, currently in Chile on an official visit.
