MOSCOW, April 7, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - The Iraqi settlement should be achieved through political negotiations, not through use of force, believes Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Rodina faction in the Russian State Duma.

"We should start broad negotiations, taking the problem to the UN consideration, to attract powerful countries to its settlement," he told journalists on Wednesday.

When commenting on the recent outbreak of violence in the region, the MP pointed out that "no people can suffer an occupational, puppet regime for a long time." "The People of Iraq were faithful to their leaders and fell victim to extremism and terrorism. Now they are fighting to survive," Rogozin said.

"Americans' presence in Iraq will not bring them anything good, even if they increase their contingent in the country," he believes. "The ground beneath American soldiers' feet will be on fire, and even other countries that sent their troops to Iraq will be attacked," he maintains.

According to Rogozin, "Not only Spain, but also Poland, Ukraine and all other countries whose forces are involved in settling the Iraqi crisis should think about it." "Anyway, the lack of the solid reason for aggression will boomerang to the country that decided to bring troops in Iraq," the Russian deputy said. (nek/cor)
