MAJORITY OF RUSSIANS DESCRIBE ECONOMIC REFORM AS THE MOST CRUCIAL

MOSCOW, April 5, 2004 (RIA Novosti's Nikolai Zherebtsov) - 51% of Russians believe that the president and the government should focus, above all, on the economic reforms, according to the independent Russian Public Opinion and Market Research (ROMIR Monitoring) service. The service conducted a representative poll in 107 cities and villages across Russia among 1,600 Russian nationals.

As respondents were allowed to choose several optional answers from the suggested list, the aggregate amount of messages exceeds 100%.

50% of Russians point to the housing and public utilities reform as the most important.

36% of respondents believe the healthcare reform is the most burning of all, 31% say the social security reform is the most important.

The army reform was named as the most crucial by 30% of pollees, 26% pointed to the pension reform, 19% - to the education reform, 15% to the administrative reform, and 9% to the tax reform.

Other reforms were mentioned by 2% of respondents.

Residents of large cities tend to name the housing reform as the topmost priority and the healthcare reform as the second most important reform. Young people aged from 18 to 24 are, naturally, more concerned about the education reform, while the pension reform interests people over 60.
