ABY DHABI, APRIL 2. /RIA NOVOSTI / -- The sales volume of cut diamonds in the world in 2003 was from 65 to 80 billion dollars' worth. The largest increment in diamond sales (15 percent) was observed in the Middle East and India.

Organisers of the Dubai sitting of the World Diamond Council, which has ended work recently, said this after the session.

The forum was attended by over 100 representatives of the world diamond elite, including the Russian delegation led by Vyacheslav Shtyrov, president of the autonomous republic Sakha (Yakutia).

In focus at the sitting was the struggle against the inflow to the market of rough diamonds from the "conflict zones". The key role in this work is played by the interstate structure Kimberly Process with Russia as the vice-president.

Founded in 2000 and numbering over 50 member countries, the Kimberly Process opposes the illegal turnover of so-called "conflict" diamonds, which go to finance anti-governmental and terrorist movements.

Vyacheslav Shtyrov has called the Dubai forum an important event for starting in next year, Russia will head the Kimberly Process replacing Canada, the present incumbent chair.
